These are large shelled pelagic snails, up to many centimeters long, with a mainly transparent body. The shell is high pyramidal and the body can never withdrawn into the shell. Only the broad triangular visceral mass is darkly pigmented, the large eyes with black retina and the mouth organs are also clearly seen. The intestine is frequently full and visible. The body is long and cylindrical with one swimming fin (Carinaria genus).
