pelagic includes everything that is not linked to the coast or bottom of the ocean, like pelagic birds (the albatross), pelagic whaling (from a whale factory ship) or pelagic fishes and molluscs which are independent of the bottom or coast throughout their life cycle. Thus nekton and plankton both form part of the pelagic environment.
